Grant Opportunity for Minnesota Arts and Health Nonprofits

The Minnesota State Arts Board is currently accepting applications for the fiscal year 2014 Partners in Arts Participation grant program.

Grant funds may be used by Minnesota nonprofit health or human service organizations to integrate the arts into their programming or services. New for this year: Partners in Arts Participation is no longer a first come, first served program. All eligible applications will be reviewed and ranked by an advisory review panel.

Organizations that would like to apply for an Arts Board grant need to use WebGrants, an online grants management system. More information can be found in the Program Overview and Application Instructions, available on the Minnesota State Arts Board website.

The deadline to submit applications for this grant program is Friday, December 13, 2013.
Simply Jane Studio Expands to Include ArtAble for People with Disabilities

In 2007, local artist Jane Elias founded Simply Jane, a unique art center in South Minneapolis where everyone could experience art. Although the studio was put to good use for drop-in painting, adult art classes, kids birthdays and team-building events, Jane saw a need within the community to reach artists with both mental and physical disabilities. In 2012, Simply Jane formed the non-profit ArtAble and became completely ADA compliant. Simply Jane & ArtAble now offer art programming for both adults and children with disabilities.
Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute's International Art Show by Artists with Disabilities Opens May 2

For nearly 50 years, the Twin Cities community has enjoyed Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute’s Annual International Art Show by Artists with Disabilities. The show stems from the passion of the late Margaret Anderson who contracted polio at the age of 26 which resulted in quadriplegia and dependence upon a respirator to sustain her life. Anderson developed a passion for painting undefined refining her skill as a painter with a brush in her mouth as opposed to her hands. Anderson inspired the establishment of the art show and directed it for many years with support from the former Sister Kenny Auxiliary.

The annual art show receives entries from than 300 artists from around the world who enter paintings, drawings, sculptures and photographs. The juried show serves several purposes:

provides a forum for artists to exhibit the creative talents of persons with disabilities,

offers artists an outlet to promote and sell their pieces,

serves as a means to create an awareness and appreciation of the talents of artists challenged by disabilities.

The Institute has a tradition of purchasing select pieces from each of its shows and has assembled an expansive and impressive permanent collection.*

artAlive! will kick-off the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute’s International Art Show by Artists with Disabilities. The art show will be hosted at Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute on the campus of Abbott Northwestern Hospital from May 2-24, 2013. The show’s grand opening will be held Thursday, May 2 from 5-8:00 p.m. Regular exhibit and sale hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

*Art from the Institute’s permanent collection will be exhibited at artAlive! on Friday, April 26, 2013.

Artists are invited to submit materials to be considered for participation. The exhibit, planned for November/December, 2013 at the Government Center in downtown Minneapolis, will showcase the broad spectrum of impressive arts and healing activities in the Twin Cities.

The show will be installed in a secure, glass-enclosed gallery space on the A-Level of the Government Center, in a hallway connecting the Government Center with City Hall.
